My mom, brother, sister in law, sister and her fiance all came over to the house today for an impromptu lunch.
We had a really fun time eating pizza, hanging out and playing “Mexican Bingo”, a Christmas gift I received from Cali and Will. And, if the game alone wasn’t funny enough already... the bingo cards inside were funnier.
Here’s a pic for example:
Ummm.... yeah, so I know I’m definitely not fluent (yet) in Espanol... but, I’m pretty good with pictures. Looks like El Borracho is the "town drunk". Never would you see that on bingo cards in the US.
“In many cultures there is an ancient custom of giving a tenth of each year’s income to some holy use. For Christians, to observe the forty days of Lent is to do the same thing with roughly a tenth of each year’s days. After being baptized by John in the river Jordan, Jesus went off alone into the wilderness where he spent forty days asking himself the question what it meant to be Jesus. During Lent, Christians are supposed to ask one way or another what it means to be themselves.” -Buechner
So, this begs the question for me...
...what does it mean to “be myself”??? What are the questions I’m supposed to be asking??? Because it seems to me that I can’t fully know God until I know myself. And, I do, deeply desire to know God. More. Here’s what I think it means, for me, anyway.
...to be honest about my heart and feelings...
...to stay engaged in the process with myself and others...
...that self-awareness ultimately, leads me to greater understanding, love, need, desire, and dependence for God.
This year (with a dear friend’s prompting), I have decided to “give up and take on” some thing(s) that would lead me into my own “wilderness”...
I’ve decided this year to create some margin in my life. We are turning off the tube (and facebook) for 40 days. (That in itself is a minor miracle). My desire is to create some silence everyday, so that I can listen to myself and my God.
Oh, and... I’m going to try and blog a picture every day for 40 days. Here’s a snapshot from my Ash Wednesday...
I LOVE this kid! We had such a fun day together. I LOVE his intensity for life... you can see it on his face as he works this puzzle.
It’s amazing what no tv and no computer will do for a relationship. :-)
What will you be “giving up or taking on” for Lent this year?
Hey everyone! I just wanted to take this commercial break during the Oscars and remind you that we are attempting to raise money for Young Life (Vida Joven) Guatemala by selling The Laundry EP (a collection of some of my demos). Go to www.darrellvanzant.com to get the details. And if you give a gift of $20 or more to Young Life Guatemala, be sure to email me (or comment here) and let me know so that I can send you a copy of the EP. My email address for this is darrell@darrellvanzant.com. Thanks for dreaming along with us!
PLEASE, PLEASE take a few minutes to read and watch the following.
This from my friend, Brady Greene, Area Director of Young Life Guatemala. He, his family and YL staff are making a HUGE IMPACT in the country of Guatemala. They are taking the gospel very seriously, loving on the least, last, and lost there. Jesus, with skin on... walking through some of the worst slums in Central America and “doing life” with the people that live there.
I’ve seen this ministry with my own eyes, and it’s nothing short of miraculous.
The tragic part of this story is that they are out of money. The bottom line: if they don’t raise enough money in the next few months, they will be forced to leave Guatemala prematurely.
PLEASE pray about giving to Vida Joven (Young Life) Guatemala. Sacrificially giving.
After you read (and watch) the following, there will be contact info for your questions and gifts. Please feel free to contact me as well.
